Jealous guardian of Hispano-Arabic culture and
civilisation, the beauty and history of Fez spreads over Morocco. Fromthe
endless labyrinth of its tangled lanes emerges a religious, intellectual and
artistic tradition, which has made this imperial city the favourite residence
and the capital of countless dynasties.
Bustling and hospitable, Fez does not however give up its
secrets easily. From the top of its hills, where the tombs
of the Merinide necropolis seem to slumber, stretches
a glittering sea of coppery roofs atop walls splashed with
light, ali containing within their anonymity a heritage that
only requires time to reveal itself to travellers.
Because architects took it in turns to build it, because
craftsmen devoted their lives to ma king it beautiful,
because poets addressed their finest verses to it, because
it was the subject of numerous covetous thoughts and
because the historians protected it against everything that
could harm it, this ancient city now resembles an intact gem from a glorious
past that made Fez a city of lights, whose splendour has shone with the same
intensity through the mists of time.
